Bank of Korea Governor Lee Chang-yong has met with the heads of six major banks, including KB Kookmin, Shinhan, Hana, Woori, NH Nonghyup, and IBK Industrial Bank, to request their active participation in the Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) project. During the meetings, he explained the significance of the ‘Agora Project’, an international cooperative project that explores the possibility of improving the international payment system using institutional CBDC and tokenized deposits of commercial banks. He also requested cooperation for the Bank of Korea’s digital currency test, ‘Project Han River’, a domestic test project that converts commercial bank deposits into tokens linked to CBDC for use as a payment method in real life.
